Gert Schnall
From Rosalie Farb:
Of the Schnall siblings, Gert came first to America. Charlie sent for her well before the war, from Poland, to marry her, and she came and lived with a family, till she was old enough to marry, however; she married Mitch Shapiro instead. Charlie married Mary.
Gert had sent for Shirley to come, and then for my mother, Chaja, whose papers were already completed. Chaja stayed in Poland to care for her ailing mother, and Betty came in her stead.
From Rosalie Farb:
Gert was really beautiful. When my parents and I came to Canada, Aunt Gert wrote to my mother, asking if she could adopt me, as she , Gert, could give me a better life, because my parents were so poor and because I was a child of the family, and my mother wrote back, saying even of she is poor, she will not sell her children.
From Rosalie Lazarow:
Wow, I did not know that Aunt Gert wanted to adopt you. I cannot imagine that ever happening in our family. Yes, I had heard from my Mom several times that Gert was a beautiful girl and had many guys calling on her. She was told this by one of Aunt Gert's friends who had been friends with her from the time she came over to America. By the time my Mom came to America Aunt Gert was married.
